The Caped Crusader returns — for a second season of Batman: The Audio Adventures. It dropped on streaming platforms on Friday and the creators talked it up at New York Comic Con.
Podcasting has, in a way, resurrected the old-time radio play, and the Batman brand is taking advantage of the retro-type medium. The new season includes the voicework of Jeffrey Wright (Batman), Bobby Moynihan (The Penguin), director Dennis McNicholas, and a slew of celebrity voiceovers, including many Saturday Night Live alums.
At Comic Con Friday, McNicholas provided a glimpse into the new episodes. Fan favorite Harley Quinn will be "starting from scratch" on the show, he said, and there will be more Scarecrow-heavy storylines. He also teased that as a way to force the hand of Warner Bros. to renew the audio show for a third season, he wrote an "extreme cliffhanger" for the Season 2 finale.
While there's plenty of comic book action to be had this season, McNicholas admitted to sticking to his comedy roots as he brought the world of Gotham City to life, and pointed to the classic Adam West Batman TV series from the '60s as his inspiration.
"Basically my idea was just to take that formula and introduce a little scuzziness and a little stakes," he said. "The way I was pitching it early on, when I was trying to get DC on board, imagine if Quentin Tarantino directed an episode of the Adam West show with all that might come along with that … it's a little bit more mean-spirited version of the Adam West show."
"A fan of the series came up to me and said it's like listening to an episode of 'SNL' that's just dedicated to Batman," added Moynihan. "That really hit me. I agree with that. It's so funny, and it's self-aware."
The 'SNL' link was no accident as McNicholas, a longtime writer for the iconic sketch comedy, noted that he was able to ask his friends to join in the fun. Besides Moynihan, Jason Sudeikis, Melissa Villaseñor, Seth Meyers, and Chris Parnell all feature in the audio series.
Despite the familiar names attached, Moynihan, a fan of the material, did say there was a lot of pressure to succeed in the role of the iconic bird-related bad guy.
"Once he asked me to do it, I keep saying I got nervous. I practiced a lot, and I don't think I've done that in a long time because you just want to do it justice," he said.
Batman: The Audio Adventures, Season 2 is available now on podcast platforms and HBO Max.
